Sixth Form at The Sandon School
Choosing where to study is an important and exciting decision as it prepares you for your educational pathway and for your future career and adult life. At The Sandon Sixth Form, we are justifiably proud of providing an opportunity where you can thrive, both academically and personally, in a friendly, supportive and purposeful environment. Our vision for the sixth form is to challenge and prepare our students to enter the world by developing independence and leadership skills, allowing them to make a real difference to their lives and the lives of others.
Students who are successful in securing a place in our sixth form will enjoy positive relationships with committed teachers and a supportive pastoral team. Our wide range of opportunities offers the time and support for you to become involved with issues that are important to young people today. Our strong student voice has enabled us to develop these opportunities such as: working in teams to promote charity and fundraising across
the school; considering our environmental impact; the academic and pastoral mentoring of younger students; diversity and equality issues as well as other areas that students have raised.
A Message From The Sixth Form Team
Life in the sixth form is very different from Year 11. Outside of lesson times, you are encouraged to pursue areas of interest that will develop you as a young person – this may mean helping out in curriculum areas around the school; being part of the industrious Head Student Team or learning a new skill like sign language or first aid. We take advantage of opportunities that come our way and pass them through to you as electives or as the chance to work virtually with universities, employers or other schools.
If you are prepared to meet the academic challenges whilst utilising the greater timetable freedoms you have by taking advantage of the opportunities we offer, then we look forward to welcoming you in 2025 where we will all be Aiming Higher Together.
Our Sixth Form
Our sixth form is a vibrant, focussed area of the school, where students are offered the independence to pursue the areas that interest them. You will be offered the chance to fulfil your potential whilst achieving academically. You will be able to choose from a wide range of academic courses which you will see on the following pages. There really is something for everyone. Choices are constantly extended as we listen to our student requests and endeavour to meet their needs. You may decide to engage with the art and design mentorship programme, the EPQ or any of the options on the LME (Leadership, Mentorship, Enrichment) programme. The choice is yours. We offer a unique combination of strengths including:
Dedicated Study Areas
We offer three different sixth form only study areas. The Common Room, as well as being used to socialise at break and lunch times, also offers group work tables for those who like to work in a busier environment. We also offer a Group Study area which is hosted with a variety of computers and desks, where we welcome students who need to work on group projects or presentations. Finally, we offer our Silent Study area, which is designed for those who need concentrated, independent work, free from distractions.
Academic Support
We take your progress seriously and rigorously track student achievement. The two dedicated Heads of Year will work with you and your class teachers to put support packages in place if needed.
You can request learning conversations at any
time. Where necessary, these can be held with
your parents / carers too.
Leadership, Mentoring & Enrichment
Our Leadership, Mentorship and Enrichment programme (LME) is a dedicated programme designed alongside students to enrich your personal time in school. Whilst we offer timetabled slots and sessions, we are always responsive to how you might want to use this time in a meaningful way. Using Unifrog to keep track of all your successes enables you to keep all information in one place in readiness for those all-important personal statements and application forms
Learning Support
At The Sandon Sixth Form, we aim to reduce all barriers to learning as far as possible. The Learning Support Team is made up of a highly skilled team of staff who assist your teachers, the Sixth Form Team and yourselves to guide you towards your best possible examination outcomes. We have a dedicated member of the LS Team working alongside us in the Sixth Form.
The Sandon Switch
At The Sandon School, we appreciate that making your Level 3 subject choices part way through Year 11 can be a daunting experience. To help you feel confident about your choices, during the first four weeks of term, you can arrange to drop into other subject lessons to try them out.
Tutorial Time
This is delivered daily as a mix of one-to-one sessions, assemblies and whole group delivery. You can be sure of valuable, personalised one-to- one time every term to discuss your learning journey.
