Spanish

Statement of Intent for Spanish

In Year 8, students are introduced to Spanish after having begun their language journey with French in Year 7. The Spanish curriculum builds language skills and also expanding students' knowledge of the diverse cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. It is designed to resonate with students by exploring topics related to their personal interests and relationships with others and the world around them. Through this, students gain opportunities to reflect on their own identities within a multicultural framework.

The curriculum challenges students to continually develop their vocabulary and grasp of grammar, encouraging them to recognize these structures in both listening and reading tasks, while also applying them in speaking and writing. Throughout Key Stage Three, students will not only extend their language abilities but also explore a variety of topics linked to future GCSE and A-level courses.

Our approach is centred around skill development, with an emphasis on independent learning, resilience, and self-confidence. By fostering strong knowledge retention and recall, we aim to equip students with essential life skills that will help them engage with the world around them now and in the future.

We aim to create a classroom environment where students feel inspired and challenged, and where they can thrive regardless of ability. Active participation and engagement are key to making the best progress. As students continue their studies in Spanish, they will have the chance to pursue the language further at Key Stage 4, exploring themes relevant to young people in Spanish-speaking countries, and discovering both the differences and similarities with their own experiences.

The Key Stage 3-5 curriculum is carefully planned to ensure students are well-prepared for their Key Stage 4 studies. Many will continue their Spanish journey into Key Stage 5, where they will explore more advanced topics such as historical events, politics, immigration, religion, and society. In this stage, students are encouraged to delve deeper into subjects that spark their curiosity, while continuing to hone their proficiency in all four language skills
